What if a good employee worked in a place where the rules were vague, the clear ones were selectively applied, and certain employees were selected to have non-existent rules applied to them?

I’ve heard a Zen story where a student learns this when he is struck by the teacher at totally random times. At first the student goes around tense, continually blocking potential blows. But of course he can’t keep that up. So he gives up. Lesson learned.
