You know how a lot of the “jokes” in your marriage don’t look like jokes anymore when you look back after a divorce?

When we moved here 22 years ago, someone I worked with told me that the acreage enclosed by a large local manufacturer had a lot of deer, and that there was an albino deer in that area. I had never seen one, and I excitedly told my husband about it as we approached the site one day. He said, “Yeah, right” and it was a recurring thing that whenever we drove past the area he’d make a crack like, “Look! Oh, you just missed it. It was the white deer.”

Today, I was driving home after a conversation I had with someone about hopes for the future. I was driving near that area. He simply stepped out of the woods, poised and glorious—a white deer.
