You know, I really resent the box that says “Divorced” among the other boxes. If I’m unmarried, aren’t I simply single? Why does a former status of “married” make my marital status any different from someone who never married? “Divorced” with its “ed” ending is defining me by something that happened to me on one day in the past because of something that happened—marriage—before that.

I’m looking forward. I’m not going to check a box about the October 18, 2010 scenario any more. I’d rather view “Eat Popcorn” frames at the movies and gorge myself in the present than be subliminally drawn back to the past by a checkmark.

Now I’m single. Now.
